Worst Songs Ever Written?

A posting from another blog prompts me to write this:

At the risk of offending lots of people, t's time to say that "Annie's Song," by John Denver is, perhaps, the worst song ever written (before I go further I should add that I do like some of John Denver's music, OK? so there). Anyway, I wonder why you never see this on any of the "worst song" lists. It consists of a list of hackneyed similes sung against a "nothing" melody. It's as if he was making up the song as he went along and..failing badly. ...well, you be the judge:
******
You fill up my senses, like a night in the forest
Like the mountains in springtime,
Like a walk in the rain,
Like a storm on the desert,
Like a sleepy blue ocean,
You fill up my senses
Come fill me again
**********
Come fill me again? COME FILL ME AGAIN? How bad is that? And the second verse is even worse.
John Lennon's "Imagine" might be worse but not much.

John Denver was known for writing some of his songs on a rocky mountain high. Maybe this was one of them.

My nomination is Paul Anka's Havin My Baby.

PAUL: Havin' my baby
What a lovely way of sayin' how much you love me
Havin' my baby
What a lovely way of sayin' what you're thinkin' of me
I can see it, face is glowin'
I can see in your eyes, I'm happy you know it

BOTH: That you're havin' my baby
PAUL: You're the woman I love and I love what it's doin' to ya
BOTH: Havin' my baby
PAUL: You're a woman in love and I love what's goin' through ya

PAUL: The need inside you, I see it showin'
Whoa, the seed inside ya, baby, do you feel it growin'?
Are you happy you know it? That you're

BOTH: Havin' my baby

ODIA: I'm a woman in love and I love what it's doin' to me
BOTH: Havin' my baby
ODIA: I'm a woman in love and I love what's goin' through me

PAUL: Didn't have to keep it
Wouldn't put ya through it
You could have swept it from you life
But you wouldn't do it, no, you wouldn't do it

BOTH: And you're havin' my baby

ODIA: I'm a woman in love and I love what it's doin' to me
BOTH: Havin' my baby
ODIA: I'm a woman in love and I love what's goin' through me

PAUL: Havin' my baby (havin' my baby)
What a lovely way of sayin' how much you love me

FADE
PAUL: Havin' my baby (havin' my baby)
ODIA: I'm a woman in love and I love what's goin' through me

Well, I've got to admit that's pretty bad.

(been having trouble posting a comment...)

unca: do agree w/"annie's song". always thought that the one line "you fill up my senses" should be "you fill my sinuses"...

but blasphemous comment re john lennon's "imagine"! (however, i don't know that i've seen the words written out -- i'm probably reacting sentimentally. being that he's dead and all...)

blogball: totally agree w/"havin' my baby"!!! it is a *really* stupid song (especially from a female perspective)!

I do think that Imagine is way overrated. I believe the song was released after Lennon died so it received allot of attention. Plus the song is about peace and stuff so that played on peoples emotions. I think if Lennon had written this back in his Beatle days it would have been just a sub par Beatle song.

The Havin my baby song has always irritated me to a point where I cringe every time I hear it. I guess it’s mostly because of the words. If you read or listen to the lyrics it’s all about her love for him. What an egotistical self serving jerk. I always thought it would be great if turned into the “You’re So Vain” song by Carly Simon….. I’m havin your baby and you probably think this baby is about you don’t you don’t you etc.

unca: i came to your site by clicking on your comment on someone else's blog. it comes up with your profile. do you know that you're listed as a "female"? this confused me as i thought you were an "uncle" of some kind... well, you can consider this a helpful editorial comment (or not). i'm always "helping" bryan out, as you can tell if you've followed my comments to him. i'm *sure* that he really appreciates it -- he just hasn't expressed it yet...

blogball: loved your comment re "you're so vain"! that would've been a perfect comeback to paul.

HA!!!! These are great!! Things for posting your post on my post :) I didn't know you were doing the same thing. I honestly didn't steal it!
Thanks for sharing. And that "Havin' my Baby" song is terrible! I like your solution, blogball, that it turn into the You're So Vain song. She would be singing that and what a perfect comeback. That'd shut him right up, yeah?
But I have to say I kinda like Annie's Song. I'm a dork, I know. Lotta memories, I guess. Isn't that the power of most songs? And I like to sing Imagine.
Whattaya think of MUSKRAT LOVE, tho?? How 'bout that stupid song?

For the record, I *like* Annie's song. I grant you the lyrics aren't exactly Shakespeare, but they get the job done and I think the melody/chord progression is really pretty.
I went on a rant once about a 50's rock n roll song, and my client (who had been a professional musician) just smiled and said, "Yeah, but it resonated with a lot of people. It touched something in them, it made them feel a certain way. That's all it was supposed to do..." So I've been less judgemental about music since then.

EXCEPT:
Maggie May by Rod Stewart is quite possibly the worst song ever written (with Havin' My Baby a close second). In fact, I hate that song so much I think I'll make an entire post on my own blog to rant about it...
